MPCF to host Relay for Life event
For the sixth year in a row, the Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility will host a special Relay for Life event.
“Last year the men’s and women’s units, through auctions of donated items, crafts donated to the community event, punch cards for food/activities, raised $15,000,” said Stephanie Hubbard, American Cancer Society community relations staff person.
This year, according to Hubbard, the corrections facility is planning to increase their donations. Hubbard said that the inmates donate their crafts for sale at the community event.
The women’s correctional facility has participated in the event for six years while this year’s event will be the third for the men.
“We had staff at the correctional facility, ladies that were working in the women’s unit, who came up with the idea that maybe they could accomplish having a smaller version of Relay for Life inside the correctional facility,” Hubbard said. “That was about six years ago.”
According to Hubbard, the Mt. Pleasant correctional facility was the first in the nation to host a Relay for Life event.
