Alan Huisinga will run for MP Ward IV council position
Alan Huisinga has announced his candidacy for Mt. Pleasant City Council representing Ward IV. Huisinga will seek the seat vacated by Stan Curtis.
Huisinga has 40 years of business management experience, community leadership involvement and military experience. “Through professional and volunteer experiences, I have learned the value of teamwork, consensus building, problem-solving, listening skills and the ability to think outside the box,” said Huisinga. “These lessons, coupled with my experience in long-range strategic planning and fiscal management, will translate well into the role of Ward IV city council member.” Huisinga looks forward to the opportunity to serve the community and continue to improve the quality of life for the residents of Mt Pleasant.
Huisinga relocated to Mt. Pleasant during the spring of 2009 upon his retirement as president and chief operating officer of EMC National Life Company in Des Moines. He met his wife, Melinda Shepp Huisinga, while both were attending AIB College of Business in Des Moines. She is a native of Mt. Pleasant, which is the reason they later returned. After graduating from AIB, both earned their bachelor of science degrees in business administration from Upper Iowa University.
While living and raising family in Carlisle, Huisinga co-chaired a $1.8 million dollar project to fund a new aquatic center and was a member of the United Methodist Church where he served as chairperson of the administrative council, church treasurer, high school Sunday School teacher, youth fellowship leader and mentor for at-risk elementary students through KIDS HOPE USA. Huisinga also served as founder and charter board member of the Carlisle Area Dollars for Scholars chapter and, as a result, received the Leading the Way Award from KCCI-TV, the national Golden Tassle Award and Volunteer of the Year.
Huisinga is no stranger to Mt. Pleasant. He has attended the Old Threshers Reunion every year since 1969; for the past 15 years he has been an exhibitor in the tractor area. He has been serving as development officer, a volunteer position, for the Old Threshers Foundation since 2010. He is also currently serving as a member of the Healthy Henry County Communities board, the Chamber of Commerce Tourism committee and the City of Mt. Pleasant Community Development Committee. The Huisingas are members of the First United Methodist Church, the Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce, the Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club and the Mt. Pleasant Rec Center.
Ward IV includes residents living southeast of the corner of East Green and South Locust streets (Lincoln Elementary School) and southeast of the corner of East Washington and South Walnut streets, which includes the neighborhoods of Sheaffer Addition, Threshers Meadow, Linden Heights, Ashford Park and Heather Estates.
The general election is Tuesday, November 5, 2013
