Allan D. Shook
Allan D. Shook, 86, Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, July 11, 2013, while fishing near Mt. Pleasant.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 24, from noon to 7 p.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Pleasant at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 25. There will be a private committal at Forest Home Cemetery. He was born Aug. 7, 1926, in Mt. Pleasant, and was the son of Hemstead L. and Clela M. Campbell Shook. He married Jean Wells on June 4, 1947.
He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1944 and entered the United States Navy in July of that year. After serving his country for two years, he returned home and graduated from the University of Iowa receiving a bachelor of science degree and a teacher’s certificate. He taught math and science in Danville and Keokuk. In June of 1951, he joined his parents in the family insurance agency where he worked until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of Rotary, Jaycees and the Jr. Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Mt. Pleasant School Board, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
He enjoyed volunteering at care centers, mentoring at the middle school and serving on the Henry County Conservation Board. He enjoyed fishing, finding Indian artifacts, supporting young atheletes and collecting and polishing rocks.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lynn (Tom) Ellsworth of Mt. Pleasant, and Rebecca (Michael) Williams of Peyton, Colo.; four granddaughters; two step-granddaughters; four great-granddaughters; and one step-great-grandson.
Preceding him in death are his parents.
