Anna Marie Urban, 92, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 1, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father John Spiegel officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where the Catholic Daughters will recite a rosary at 4 p.m.. She was born Nov. 5, 1920, in St. Paul, the daughter of Ed and Mary Denning Mertens. She was a graduate of St. Alphonsus High School and the Burlington Business College. On May 5, 1945, she married Casimir M. Urban in Jackson, Miss.She honorably served in the Women’s Army Corps as a staff sergeant during World War II. She attended Adjutant General School at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. She moved to Iowa City in 1955 from Mt. Pleasant.
She was the district manager for Avon Products for over 25 years, retiring in 1979.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she served as an usher, greeter and Eucharistic minister, and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America, the VFW, American Legion and the Moose.
Survivors include her three daughters, Ann Kinney of Cedar Rapids, Susan (Dennis) Shinners of Aurora, Colo., and Carol (Bruce) Sundquist of Hot Springs, Ark.; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Paul (Joanne) Mertens of Mt. Pleasant.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her brothers, Bernard, Henry, Frederick and Ralph.
