Area residents receive awards from IPA
Mt. Pleasant residents have received recognition from the Iowa Poetry Association (IPA).
Vicky Dovenspike, of Salem, received the third place prize for Poems for Children, Cleo McKim of Mt. Pleasant received second place Honorable Mention for National/World Events and Kenneth Bolen, Sandy Moore and Mary L. Zachmeyer also received recognition.
The Iowa Poetry Association, founded in 1945, offers an annual contest open to all Iowa residents without entry fee or obligation. Winners and other high-ranking poems in each category are published in the poetry book, Lyrical Iowa.
IPA is a not-for-profit organization whose sole purpose is to encourage and improve writing and appreciation for poetry by Iowans. IPA is affiliated with the National Federation of State Poetry Societies and the Academy of American Poets.
Submissions for the contest came from 76 of the Iowa counties and over 2,000 poems were entered, which was about 368 different poets. Content of the poems and the form varies, due to the originality of the writer.
