C. Ferne Hoefer, 104, Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Brighton, died Wednesday June 25, 2014, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at St. Joseph Church in East Pleasant Plain with the Rev. Robert Striegel officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will open at 5 p.m., Friday, June 27, at St. Joseph Church with the family present 6 to 7:30 p.m., followed by prayers for a Christian Wake at 7:30 p.m. Memorials for St. Joseph Cemetery Association may be left at the church or mailed to the family at 700 West Washington Street, Mt Pleasant, Iowa 52641.
She was born May 6, 1910, in Elsberry, Mo., to Jacob and Mary Foster Courtney. She graduated from Stockport High School in1928, and married Norbert Kurtz Aug. 11, 1931. He preceded her in death. She married Ethiel “Nick” Hoefer Jan. 24, 1982. He preceded her in death. She lived most of her married life on a farm south of Brighton and moved to Mt. Pleasant in January of 1997. She was a member of the Burr Oak Club, St. Joseph Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.
She is survived by one son Kenneth (Carol) Kurtz of Brighton; and two daughters, Maryln Strohman of Mt. Pleasant and Ruth Ann Kehl of Dubuque; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; one son, Alan Kurtz; and seven brothers and an infant twin brother, Carroll, Frank, Clark, Gordon, Herschel, Calvin and Floyd Courtney; and five sisters, Grace Garrett, Leota Brookhart, Vada Heyde, Beulah Lechner and Leora Courtney.
