Charges filed in connection with death of infant in Libertyville
FAIRFIELD — A 15-year-old girl in Libertyville has been charged with child endangerment resulting in death after a deceased infant girl was found in a closet at a residence in Libertyville on Oct. 11.
At approximately 4:45 a.m. on Oct. 11, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s department executed a search warrant at 703 East Maple Street and discovered the deceased infant. It appeared as if the infant had been recently born.
Upon further investigation, it was determined that a 15-year-old female had given birth to the child some time on the morning of Oct. 10.
The charges, if the offense was committed by an adult, would be a Class B felony with up to 50 years in prison. Given the suspect’s age, the charge must be filed in juvenile court.
Iowa law allows the option of applying to waive the juvenile to adult court. In this case, according to a press release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, all options are still being considered. Any application to waive jurisdiction to adult court would be decided by the court.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, the Jefferson County Medical Examiner, the Iowa Department of Human Services and the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office.
