Christner perfect as New London softball cruises to regional win
UDELL — She didn’t give up a hit, she didn’t give up a walk.
In fact, only one batter even put the ball in play.
New London pitcher Morgan Christner was perfect through all four innings of last night’s regional victory over Moulton-Udell, striking out 11 of the 12 batters she faced, and the New London bats were there to back her up.
The Class 1A 10th-ranked Tigers won by a score of 15-0, and they advance to the regional semifinal against WACO.
Christner continued her dominance on the mound with her 27th win of the season.
The New London freshman has an ERA of 1.59 and has moved up to the No. 2 spot across the state in total strikeouts this season with 339.
She is behind only Lexi Binder of Lawton-Bronson, who is also a freshman. Binder has recorded 359 strikeouts on the season.
In last night’s regional game, only one Moulton-Udell batter put the ball in play; every other batter struck out.
Christner helped herself out at the plate in the win, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.
Sami Koontz and Emily Parks were also each 3-for-3. Koontz scored four times; Parks had a double and knocked in three runs.
Parks leads the team with a batting average of .460 this season; Christner and Koontz are right behind her with averages of .441 and .434, respectively.
Emma Pry also helped the Tigers at the plate last night with a pair of hits and three RBIs of her own.
The Tigers are now 28-9 on the season and will play against WACO at 7 p.m. on Friday in Danville.
The winner of that game will move on to the regional final — played at Pella Christian School on Monday — and will face the winner of Friday’s game between Twin Cedars (24-8) and Earlham (28-7).
