City's 10 largest employers have nearly 4,000 employees

Mt. Pleasant’s 10 largest employers had a total of 3,626 employees in 2012, according to the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance. The list was included in the fiscal 2012 Mt. Pleasant Community School District’s annual report.

That figure was a slight decrease from 2003 when the 10 largest employers boasted a workforce of 4,108 workers.

All told, 2012’s top 10 employed 32.23 percent of the community’s workforce.

Following are the top 10 employers in 2012, followed by its number of employees and percentage of total employment.

1, Walmart Distribution, 867, 7.71 percent;

2. Metrogroup, 550, 4.89 percent;

3. Department of Corrections, State of Iowa, 400, 3.56 percent;

4. Henry County Health Center, 330, 2.93 percent;

5. Mt. Pleasant Community School District, 325, 2.89 percent;

6. Hearth & Home, 275, 2.44 percent;

7. Mt. Pleasant Foods, 250, 2.22 percent;

8. Alaniz LLC, 220, 1.96 percent;

9. Mackay Envelopes, 209, 1.86 percent;

10. Iowa Wesleyan College, 200, 1.78 percent.

In 2003, the top 10 list looked like the following (name of employer, employees and percentage of total employment).

1. Walmart Distribution, 900, 8 percent;

2. Hearth & Home, 615, 5.47 percent;

3. Metrogroup, 500, 4.44 percent;

4. Department of Corrections, 435, 3.87 percent;

5. Celestica, 425, 3.78 percent;

6. Mt. Pleasant Community School District, 325, 2.89 percent;

7. Henry County Health Center, 300, 2.67 percent;

8. Mackay Envelopes, 218, 1.94 percent;

9. CECO Building Systems, 200, 1.78 percent;

10. Iowa Wesleyan College, 190, 1.69 percent.

Industrial and commercial properties also represent a significant portion of the taxable value in not only Mt. Pleasant, but Henry County.

The 10 largest property taxpayers in 2012 combined for a taxable valuation of $64,621,522, according to statistics from the Henry County Auditor’s office that were published in the school district’s annual comprehensive report.

Following are the top 10 principal property taxpayers in 2012. The taxpayer is listed first followed by the taxable valuation and percentage of total taxable valuation.

1. Walmart Property, Inc,, $25,326,410, 5.64 percent;

2. Walmart Real Estate Business Trust, $9,226,953, 2.06 percent;

3. Pioneer Hi-Bred International, $4,601,468, 1.03 percent;

4. BNSF Railway, $4,399,421, 0.98 percent;

5. Iowa Telecommunications Services, $4,174,430, 0.93 percent;

6. WCK Mt. Pleasant LC (Hy-Vee), $4,040,143, 0.90 percent;

7. Mt. Pleasant Assisted Living LLC, $3,482,891, 0.78 percent;

8. Protein Processing (West Liberty Foods), $3,255,701, 0.73 percent;

9. Millard Refrigerated Services, Inc., $3,074,132, 0.69 percent;

10. Gregory and Toni Shottenkirk, $3,039,984, 0.68 percent.

In 2003, this list looked like the following (taxpayer, followed by taxable valuation and percentage of total taxable valuation).

2. Pioneer Hybrid International, $5,635,920, 1.55 percent;

3. Iowa Telecommunications Services, $5,163,264, 1.42 percent;

4. Walmart Stores East, $4,981,390, 1.37 percent;

6. BNSF Railway, $3,858,854, 1.06 percent;

7. Interstate Power and Light Co., $3,696,251, 1.02 percent;

8. Metromail, $3,658,440, 1.01 percent;

9. Riverside Paper Holdings LLC, $3,149,260, 0.87 percent;

10. Jasmin LLLP, $3,141,710, 0.87 percent.
