Conwell fans 13 as WACO softball runs away with win
WAYLAND — It was a close game until the sixth inning, when the WACO softball team broke away with an eight-run frame to claim an 11-1 win over Louisa-Muscatine on Wednesday night, getting their first victory of the season by a decisive margin.
Warrior pitcher Sara Conwell kept the Falcons at bay with 13 strikeouts in six innings. She picked up the win on the mound, giving up just three hits, two walks and one run.
The Warriors took an early lead in the contest, scoring twice in the first inning and once in the second. L&M also put up one run early, giving WACO a 3-1 lead.
The middle innings were scoreless, but WACO put the game out of reach with eight runs in the sixth.
On the night, Leah McElhinney led the Warriors at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Morgan Dugger and Conwell were each 2-for-3 with two walks, while Rosemary Skriver was 2-for-4. Conwell had a double and an RBI.
Other WACO hits came from Jaelyn Unternahrer and Hannah Black.
Cierra McArtor had an RBI, and she also stole three bases. Unternahrer had two steals.
The Warriors are now 1-3 on the season and in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division. They are scheduled to host L&M again tonight (Friday) at 5:30 p.m.
