As another year dawns, Henry County Engineer Jake Hotchkiss is reflecting upon 2016 with satisfaction.
“Our fiscal 2017 construction is pretty much done,” he told the Henry County supervisors Tuesday morning in the board’s first meeting of the year. “It was a very busy summer. I am grateful the weather still has remained good enough for doing some ditching and brush clearing.”
Hotchkiss, who will present his fiscal 2018 budget to the supervisors on Tuesday, Jan. 10, said he doesn’t have near the construction planned for the coming summer. “It won’t be nearly as busy next summer but we will be doing a lot of planning for the summer of 2018.”
The engineer said the secondary-roads department has been working on gravel roads — trying to iron out the bumps before more inclement weather visits. “We are working on some of the gravel roads. We’re having normal issues and getting some complaints about potholes. Those form as the rain and snow comes. The intersections are the worst areas.”
Other work by the roads crew last week included clearing brush on county right-of-ways; working on paved granular shoulders around Salem; completing a ditching project south of Salem; hauling spot rock to various locations; and hauling an excavator to Winfield Avenue to work on clearing and grubbing for an upcoming project.
Since it was the first meeting of the year for the board, Marc Lindeen ascended to the chairman of the board for the coming year and Greg Moeller will serve as vice chairman.
Supervisors also made their committee appointments for 2017. They are as follows:
Lindeen — 911 board/Emergency Management Board; Great River Regional Waste Authority; Decat; Henry County Landfill; Henry County Community Action Program; Southeast Iowa Community Action; Southeast Iowa Links Region Governing Board (SEIL).
Moeller — Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission; REAP; Healthy Henry County Communities; Regional Utilities Service Systems (RUSS).
Gary See — 8th Judicial District Adult Correction; Regional Workforce Investment Board; Mt. Pleasant Area Development Commission; Early Childhood Development; Area 16 Regional Transit Authority.
Supervisors meet again in regular session Thursday, Jan. 5, at 9 a.m., at the courthouse.
