County unemployment shows significant spike

Henry County’s unemployment rate rose by 1.5 percent in January, according to figures released Monday by Iowa Workforce Development.

Some 7.6 percent of the county’s labor force of 9,280 workers were unemployed in January, compared with 6.1 percent in December, the report said.

All area counties also showed a marked increase in people looking for work. Lee County’s unemployment, for example, rose 2 percent to 10.9 percent.

Statewide January unemployment remained at 5 percent while the national rate was at 7.9 percent, a one-tenth of one percent increase.

Following are the unemployment rates for area counties, multi-county micropolitan areas and cities. The December figure is listed first followed by the January rate.

Counties — Appanoose, 7.9, 8.2; Davis, 6.9, 7.2; Des Moines, 6.7, 9.2; Jefferson, 6.2, 7.2; Johnson, 3.6, 4.0; Keokuk, 5.4, 7.0; Louisa, 5.5, 6.8; Muscatine, 5.5, 6.3; Van Buren, 7.3, 8.0; Wapello, 6.9, 7.8; Washington, 4.1, 5.7.

Multi-county micropolitan areas — Burlington, 6.9, 9.2; Fort Madison-Keokuk, 8.7, 10.4; Muscatine, 5.5, 6.4.

Cities — Burlington, 7.1, 9.6; Ottumwa, 7.1, 7.8.
