Curtis D. Coppes
Curtis D. Coppes, 86, of Yarmouth, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington.
The funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 27, at 10:30 a.m. at Elliott Chapel. Rev. Jeff Duffy will officiate. Interment with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard, will be held at Trinity Cemetery, Mt. Union. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Chapel with the family present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials have been established for the Yarmouth Baptist Church and Great River Hospice House.
Coppes was born March 6, 1930, on the family farm at Yarmouth to George and Lavina M. Wallman Coppes. On May 29, 1965 he married Shirley J. Baldridge in Burlington.
He was a 1947 graduate of Yarmouth High School. From 1951 to 1953 he served in the Army in Germany. He was a lifelong farmer and raised cattle. He also worked at GE before retiring in 1998. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and loved the Cubs and the Hawkeyes. He was a member of the American Legion and the Yarmouth Baptist Church.
Coppes is survived by his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Christine (Karl) Arbogast, of Okinawa, Japan; and Catherine (Ed) Roberts, of Burlington; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Florence Connolly and Selma Connolly.
