Defensive woes plague Wolves in loss

WINFIELD — Three Winfield-Mt. Union errors helped the visiting Mediapolis baseball team to a five-run second inning on its way to a 10-2 Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division win over the Wolves on Tuesday night.

The Wolves fall to 3-10 on the season and 3-9 in the SEISC North with the loss. Mediapolis improves to 13-3 and is 11-1 in the conference.

“The (top of the) second inning just kind of killed us,” W-MU Coach Kenton Klopfenstein said. “We gave up five runs and had three errors on basic routine plays. That put us in a hole we couldn’t get out of.”

Mediapolis added two more runs in the third and three in the seventh.

The Wolves got off to a good start in the game, getting through the top of the first inning quickly and scoring a run in the bottom of the frame to get on the board first. They didn’t make it much further than that, however, before they ran into trouble with fielding errors.

“They were just routine ground balls — we couldn’t make the throw,” Klopfenstein said. “We need to work on defense (before our next game). Our offense is still a work in progress, too, but in the last week or so, we just haven’t played very good defense.”

The mishaps made starting pitcher Garret Baker’s job tougher. He went six innings and gave up 11 hits and nine runs — but just four of those runs were earned. He struck out one and walked none.

Christian Fenton came in for the last three outs, giving up one hit and one unearned run.

The Wolves scored their second run in the third inning, but couldn’t get anything going in the last four frames.

At the plate, leadoff hitter Sam Jennings went 3-4 and Darren Hunter had a pair of hits. Hunter and Matthew Neibuhr each knocked in a run.

On Friday, the Wolves will travel to Columbus Junction for another SEISC North contest, and they continue their conference road trip on Tuesday when they play at IMS in Kalona.

They return to their home field on Friday, June 28, to host Lone Tree.
