Democratic Party platform panel to gather in Salem
SALEM — The Iowa Democratic Party Second Congressional District (24 counties) Platform Committee will convene at the Salem Crew Library tomorrow (Sat.) from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
This is the next step in the election year political party process from county convention (which were held in each county March 8) to district convention (to be in Newton, Jasper County, Saturday April 26 and State Convention which will be June 21 in Des Moines).
County parties have submitted party platform resolutions to the district committee. The committee meeting in Salem will prepare a final document of resolutions for the Newton Convention.
The party platform is the listing of issues and positions recommended for adoption by the state party and Democratic candidates for office.
Henry County is considered a good site for such a gathering as its location in the Second Congressional District facilitates travel for the convention delegates who serve on the platform committee. The Second Congressional District extends from Scott and Clinton counties to the northeast to Clarke and Decatur Counties to the southwest.
Bob Thomas from Appanoose County chairs the Committee. Dave Helman of rural Salem is coordinating the event. Questions about the event may be directed to Helman at 319-248-1469.
