Don Fredrick Lauer
Don Fredrick Lauer, 92, Swedesburg and rural Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday Jan. 17, 2013, at Legacy Point in Iowa City.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Youngquist officiating. Military recognition was given. The family met with friends following the service at the Swedesburg Parish Center.
A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Quad Cities Honor Flight and the Swedesburg Lutheran Church.
The Honts Funeral Home in Winfield provided care for the family.
The son of Chester and Ruth Shriver Lauer, he was born on Sept. 12, 1920, in Henry County. He married Dorothy Peterson on Sept 20, 1946, in Iowa City. She preceded him in death.
He graduated from Olds High School in 1938 and attended Iowa Wesleyan College. He served in the US Army during World War II in General McArthur’s Advanced Headquarters in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a farmer and was an examiner with the Iowa Department of Banking, retiring in 1985.
He was a member of the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Olds American Legion, the treasurer for the SVEA Insurance for 35 years, and Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He enjoyed his cabin in Minnesota, traveling, farming.
He is survived by two daughters, Ann Lewis of Silvis, Ill. and Nancy (Bob) Hanna of St. Charles, Mo.; two sons, Art (Rose) Lauer of Winfield and Tom (Cindy) Lauer of Coralville; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a brother, Robert.
