Dorothy M. Van Dyke
Dorothy M. Van Dyke, 96, formerly of Winfield, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, in Cedar Falls, where she had resided since 2004.
The funeral service will be Saturday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Winfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Randy Moser officiating. Burial will follow at the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials have been established for the Winfield United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society. Honts Funeral Home in Winfield is in charge of the arrangements.
The daughter of Henry and Blanche (Martin) Moody, she was born April 19, 1917, near Winfield. On June 9, 1937, she married Charles Van Dyke. He preceded her in death. She was a 1935 graduate of Winfield High School and then taught in a rural school for two years. She was a member of the Winfield United Methodist Church for over 70 years where she was secretary for 11 years. She also served on the Winfield Library board and Sunrise Terrace board. She was a member of T.T.T. chapter P and the V.F.W. auxiliary. The couple also hosted two foreign exchange students from Bolivia. She enjoyed traveling, spending 18 years wintering in Arizona. She also enjoyed playing cards and reading.
Survivors include one son, Gary Van Dyke of Galesburg, Ill.; one daughter, Julie (Ed) Rathmell of Cedar Falls; eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.
