Driver forces motorist off highway, leaves scene, according to report
Investigation is continuing into an accident west of Mt. Pleasant Sunday afternoon.
According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Benjamin Mark Cleveland, 23, Pleasant Hill, was driving westbound on U.S. Highway 34 at its junction with Benton Avenue. Cleveland swerved to avoid colliding with a truck that had just pulled directly into his path from the median crossover.
After Cleveland swerved to avoid colliding with the truck, his vehicle stuck a raised center island and stop sign on Benton Avenue. The vehicle then entered the north ditch of Highway 34 before stopping.
The driver of the truck stopped long enough to check on the occupants in the Honda and then fled the scene prior to law enforcement’s arrival.
The truck was eventually located and was, along with the driver, positively identified by witnesses.
While Cleveland’s Honda was a total loss, he and the three passengers with him were not injured. All four were wearing seatbelts.
Following the investigation, the sheriff’s office said applicable charges will be filed.
