Ellis H. DeGrange, 86, Mt. Pleasant, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Herbert G. Shafer will officiate. Friends are invited to join the family in a luncheon prior to the funeral beginning at noon in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery with military graveside honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Kimzey Funeral Home. The family will be present to receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be a public Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. conducted by the Mt. Pleasant Lodge #8 AF & AM.
Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the First United Methodist Church, H2O or the Pleasant Manor Activity Fund.
He was born May 6, 1926, in rural Primrose. He was the son of George Henry and Bertha Albertine (Bogert) DeGrange. He attended elementary school in Primrose and graduated from Donnellson High School in 1944. On Dec. 31, 1950, in Primrose, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Darlene Mowrey. She preceded him in death.
He farmed for a brief time following his high school graduation. He was called to serve his country during the Korean War. He was inducted into the United States Army on Jan. 16, 1953, at Ft. Des Moines. He was assigned to the 6th Army Food Service School at Camp Roberts, Calif. He became a cook assigned to the 802 Quartermaster Service Company. He was honorably discharged as a corporal on Dec. 15, 1954 at Fort Carson, Colo.
He returned home and resumed his farming operation. In 1968, he accepted a position at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown. He remained there for 10 years. He then took a position at the former Goodyear Hose Plant in Mt. Pleasant. He retired in 1992. For 20 years, he assisted Frank and Larry Van Syoc with their farming operations. He also assisted his grandson with his business, Jason’s Car Cleaning. In retirement, he was a funeral associate with the Weir Funeral Home and later the Kimzey Funeral Home.
He was member of the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Order. He was raised and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Donnellson and later transferred his membership to the Mt. Pleasant Lodge #8 AF & AM.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda (Steve) Heise and Deb (Terry) Mabeus, all of Mt. Pleasant; a sister, Margaret Rehwoldt of Mt. Pleasant; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruth DeGrange of Burlington; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren.
His parents, wife and two brothers, George Wilmer DeGrange and Ellis’ twin, Elton DeGrange, precede him in death.
