Eric Slagel, 65, Wayland, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 at his home.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in rural Wayland. Burial will be held prior to the service at 10 a.m. at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. A memorial fund has been established for the Parkview Home, Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and the Wayland first responders. Funeral arrangements are with the Beatty Funeral Home.
He was born Dec. 4, 1947, in Alma, Mich., the son of Warren and Vernelda (Widmer) Slagel. He graduated from WACO High School and Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant with a degree in foreign language. He served in voluntary service as a hospital aide in Evanston, Ill. for two years. He then began working at Bluebird Manufacturing. He was a member of the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church where he served as church historian. He volunteered at Parkview Home where he helped with wheelchair rides, bingo and spent time with residents. He enjoyed attending Bible studies, reading, watching the Cubs and bird watching.
Survivors include one sister, Wendy (Ron) Scarff of Wayland; and one brother, Kelly (Veronica) Slagel of Wayland.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one infant brother.
