Gene Allen Anderson
Gene Allen Anderson, 83, Washington, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the Faith Baptist Church with the Rev.Harald Gruber officiating. Military honors will be accorded following the services. Visitation will begin 2 p.m. Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will take place 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery in Hesper. Memorials have been established for the United Presbyterian Home, Faith Baptist Church or the memorial of donor’s choice. He was born Nov. 6, 1929, in Clermont, and was the son of Melvin O. and Gena (Stinerson) Anderson. He attended school in Clermont. He married Alice Selness on Dec. 28, 1952.
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served as Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force. He served from Nov. 6, 1948, until July 20, 1956 when he was honorably discharged. During his time in the service, he received awards for driving safety and efficiency.
He grew up in Clermont, and following his time in the military he lived Denmark, Mt. Pleasant and Washington. He began his career as an over the road trucker with Hellman Trucking Company in Pilot Grove. He continued trucking with Diamond Transportation, Case IH and Pioneer Seeds. He was a member of Kiwanis AM’ers and the Washington American Legion.
He is survived by one daughter, Jan Sue (Robert) Ellingson of Dike; one son, Ross (Janee) Anderson of Washington; four grandsons; three great-grandsons; and one brother, Merle Anderson of Elgin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
