Girls pick up second win as Warriors split with West Burlington

WAYLAND — The WACO basketball teams split with West Burlington on Tuesday night.
The girls’ team won their second game of the year, 39-27, but the boys fell to a talented Falcon squad, 69-24.
The girls’ team played a tight game through the first three quarters. The Warriors trailed, 18-14 at halftime before taking the lead in the third quarter, 24-21.
WACO was able to run away from the Falcons in the fourth quarter, 15-5, to come away with a 12-point win.
Halle Kissell had 18 points to lead the team. She had 13 in the second half, including a couple of three-pointers. Kiana Miller nailed a couple of long balls in the second half as well and finished with 12.
Clara Schmitz had four points in the win. Nadiyah Brown scored three, and Kristen Conley had two.
The boys were unable to keep up with the fast-paced Falcons. They trailed 42-15 at the break and only scored nine points in the second half.
Beau Beckler led the team with nine points in the loss. Jacob Fried had seven points and four rebounds. Wyatt Harbison scored six points and pulled down four rebounds of his own, and Colton Horak finished with two points and three assists. Jaren Unternahrer didn’t score but co-led the team with three assists.
The WACO girls fell to 2-7 on the year. The boys stayed winless, at 0-8. The teams will have a long winter break before returning to action in early Jan.
WACO’s first doubleheader of the second semester will be at Cardinal on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 6 p.m.
