Glenwood H.J. Long, 93, Riverview Hills Village in Keokuk, formerly of Donnellson, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013.

Friends may may call between noon and 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 18, at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson. A private family service will be held at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson with the Rev. Alice Hawes officiating. Burial will take place at the Evangelical Cemetery in Donnellson. Memorials to be made to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ or the Donnellson Library Building Fund or be mailed to the family at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home, P.O. Box 56, Donnellson, 52625.

Born Sept. 29, 1920, in Clarence, Mo., he was the son of G. Edward and Minnie Viola (Rennaker) Long.

On June 10, 1945, he married Florence Lucille Schlicher Long. The couple moved to Iowa, where his family farmed in the Green Bay Bottom area near Wever as well as near Donnellson, until he entered the Navy. He served from Aug. 10, 1942 to Nov. 21, 1945, in the U.S. Navy during World War II as Machinist Mate First Class aboard the USS Calvert during the invasion of Africa, Leyte, Marshall Islands, and the Solomons, including Kwajalein and Mindosa.

After the war ended, he went to work at Ben Schlicher Plumbing and Heating in Donnellson. He and his wife later owned and operated the business.

He was a member of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Donnellson. He was a 68-year active member of the American Legion Post 474, 66-year member of the George Washington Masonic Lodge, and a 62-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, all of Donnellson.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Michael (Lee Ann) Long of Macomb, Ill.; a daughter, Miriam (David) Grimes of Keokuk; granddaughters; and great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Marie Long and Nola (Hank) Merschman; daughter, Muriel Rae Long; and a great-granddaughter.
