Harold V. Horstman, 86, rural Bonaparte, died Wednesday July 17, 2013, at University Hospital, Iowa City.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 20, at Bonaparte United Church, the Revs. Goldie Laymon and Richard Eis officiating. Burial will be in Bonaparte Cemetery with military rites by Sargeant-Osweiler Post 563. Visitation will open at 2 p.m., Friday at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials to Bonaparte United Church or Bonaparte E.M.Ts may be left at the funeral home or church or mailed to the family at 1207 Hwy. 16, Hillsboro, Iowa 52630
He was born Dec. 2, 1926 in rural Bonaparte to Phillip Charles and Emma Grace Miller Horstman and married Joanna M. Hendrichsen April 28, 1956. She preceded him in death.
They farmed near Bonaparte. He also sold DeKalb seed corn for many years, worked at Bonaparte Mill and drove a Harmony School bus. He enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sports events, concerts and other activities as well as playing cards, hunting and fishing and hunting mushrooms. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II, was a member of Bonaparte United Church where he had been an elder, Sunday school teacher and had served in other capacities, was a 60 year member of Sargent-Osweiler Post No. 563, American Legion and served as president of the former Bonaparte Lions Club.
Surviving are a son, Kenny (Candy) Horstman of Bonaparte; two daughters, Kathy Van Winkle of Hillsboro and Lori (Lloyd) Bank of Salem; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Dorothy Horstman of Bonaparte.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and a brother, Harlan Horstman.
