Henry County jobless rate rises slightly

Henry County unemployment inched upward to 5.6 percent in June from 5.1 percent in May, according to Iowa Workforce Development statistics released recently.

All of Henry County’s neighbors also experienced modest jobless rate increases during the month.

Following is the unemployment rate for regional counties, multi-county micropolitan areas and cities. The May number is listed first followed by the June figure.

Counties — Appanoose, 5.9, 6.3; Davis, 5.0, 5.5; Des Moines, 5.4, 6.4; Jefferson, 5.3, 5.8; Johnson, 3.1, 3.8; Keokuk, 4.2, 4.7; Lee, 6.6, 7.2; Louisa, 4.2, 5.3; Mahaska, 4.3, 4.9; Muscatine, 4.5, 4.9; Van Buren, 5.4, 5.8; Wapello, 5.7, 6.2; Washington, 3.2, 3.7.

Multi-county micropolitan areas — Burlington, 5.4, 6.5; Ft. Madison-Keokuk, 6.7, 7.4; Muscatine, 4.4, 5.0.

Cities — Burlington, 5.9, 5.7; Ottumwa, 6.0, 6.5.

Lyon County, located in extreme northwest Iowa, had the state’s lowest unemployment at 2.5 percent. Lee County’s 7.2 percent topped the state.

Statewide, Iowa’s unemployment was changed at 4.6 percent. The nation’s unemployment remained at 7.6 percent.
