Henry County track and field athletes begin competition at Drake Relays
Competition for local track and field athletes at the Drake Relays began with Mary Wester in the shot put yesterday afternoon, and athletes continued racing this morning.
Wester finished ninth in the event on Thursday with her toss of 38-9 3/4.
The winner was Shelby Gunnells of Solon with a mark of 42-4 1/4.
Wester also participated in discus this morning, and a mark of 123-1 got her into the finals of the event. That would prove to be her best throw, and she finished in eighth place overall.
Winfield-Mt. Union’s Lou Krieger-Coen also competed in the girls’ discus. Her throw of 114-3 was good enough for 16th place in the field of 24 athletes.
On the track, Mt. Pleasant athletes took part in the first events of the day — the 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter high hurdles prelim.
Kelsi Phipps, Leslie Taylor and Cole Phillips each made finals in the event.
Phipps took third in finals in a time of 15.06 seconds, and Taylor finished seventh overall in 15.48.
Mary Young of Urbandale won the race with a Drake Relays record time of 14.30.
In the prelim, Phipps had the second-fastest time in the field with her finish of 15.04 — a career best for the Mt. Pleasant junior — and Taylor was eighth in time of 15.50.
In the 110-meter hurdles prelim, Phillips was fifth in 14.81, and he finished fifth in the finals with a time of 14.57.
Hannah Becker and Spencer White also ran in the prelim of the hurdles this morning.
Becker finished 14th overall among 32 athletes in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.10. White was 20th with a time of 15.36 in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Taylor also competed in the girls’ long jump this morning, going 17-2 and finishing in the top five.
Dustin Amos cleared 6-3 in the high jump at Drake this morning and finished in a tie for 12th place.
Jeff Giannettino of West Burlington/Notre Dame jumped 7-0 to win.
The IWC men’s 4x200 team is scheduled to compete yet today, at 1:03 p.m. The Mt. Pleasant girls’ 4x100-meter relay team will be on the track for the prelim at 5:10 tonight, and the Mt. Pleasant and WACO boys’ 4x100 teams are set to race at 6:10 p.m.
