Henry County unemployment rises marginally in August, stats show

Henry County unemployment rose by one-tenth of one percent in August, according to statistics released Tuesday by Iowa Workforce Development.

Henry County’s August jobless rate was 5.6 percent, compared with 5.5 percent in July.

Most of the county’s neighbors showed little fluctuation in unemployment numbers during August as several counties remained the same, others rose a few tenths of a percent and still others showed a modest decline.

Iowa unemployment rose in August to 4.9 percent from 4.8 percent in July. National unemployment was at 7.3 percent, a drop of one-tenth of one percent.

Lee County continued having the state’s highest unemployment (7.4 percent) while Lyon County’s 2.5 percent was at the other end of the spectrum.

Following are the August unemployment rates for neighboring counties, multi-county micropolitan areas and cities (the July figure is followed by the August rate).

Counties — Appanoose, 6.0, 6.1; Davis, 5.3, 5.3; Des Moines, 6.2, 5.8; Jefferson, 5.6, 5.6; Johnson, 4.0, 3.8; Keokuk, 4.7, 5.0; Lee, 7.2, 7.4; Louisa, 5.0, 4.9; Muscatine, 4.9, 4.9; Van Buren, 5.5, 5.6; Wapello, 6.1, 6.1; Washington, 3.6, 3.7.

Multi-county micropolitan areas — Burlington, 6.3, 6.0; Ft. Madison/Keokuk, 7.4, 7.7; Muscatine, 4.9, 4.9.

Cities — Burlington, 6.3, 6.2; Ottumwa, 6.4, 6.3.
