Henry County's unemployment remains unchanged at 5.2 percent

Henry County’s unemployment remained unchanged in May, according to statistics released this week by Iowa Workforce Development.

The county jobless rate was listed at 5.2 percent in May. Information indicated the county has a workforce of 8,930 with 490 of that total unemployed.

Unemployment in neighboring counties either showed marginal decreases in May or remained unchanged. Lee County was the only county showing a slight increase with 6.6 unemployment in May compared to 6.5 percent in April.

Following is a comparison of April and May unemployment rates for neighboring counties, multi-county micropolitan areas and cities. The April figure is listed first followed by the May rate.

Counties — Appanoose, 6.1, 5.9; Davis, 5.4, 5.1; Des Moines, 5.5, 5.5; Jefferson, 5.4, 5.3; Keokuk, 4.7, 4.3; Louisa, 4.3, 4.3; Muscatine, 4.7, 4.5; Van Buren, 5.9, 5.5; Wapello, 6.0, 5.8; Washington, 3.4, 3.3.

Multi-county micropolitan areas — Burlington, 5.6, 5.5; Fort Madison-Keokuk, 6.5, 6.9; Muscatine, 4.7, 4.5.

Cities — Ottumwa, 6.1, 6.0.

Iowa’s unemployment rate fell from 4.7 to 4.6 percent in May. Meanwhile, the national rate rose from 7.5 to 7.6 percent.
