Mt. Pleasant Community High School was evacuated Monday for the second time this school year due to a bomb threat.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Roederer said students spent about 75 minutes (1:15-2:30 p.m.) outside the building while school personnel, law enforcement and conservation department officials scoured the building. No bomb was found.

Roederer said that writing on a boys’ bathroom wall in the north part of the building indicating a bomb would be detonated in the building was reported to the high school office at 1 p.m.

“It isn’t something we take lightly,” remarked Roederer. “We will study the writing and the tapes. You just can’t take it lightly. If we catch the suspect(s), they will be punished.”

He said law enforcement officials from both the Mt. Pleasant Police Department and Henry County Sheriff’s Office helped in the search.

No suspect has been caught in the previous bomb threat last fall. The school district is offering a $1,000 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the culprits.

Roederer says bomb threats put the district in a precarious position. “It means a loss of class time, and it is a difficult balance ensuring the kids’ safety and giving credence to the culprit.”
