Hit-and-run driver charged with failure to yield to pedestrian
Mt. Pleasant’s Police Department has finished its investigation of a Aug. 1 hit-and-run accident in the crosswalk of the intersection of Jefferson and Monroe streets.
As a result of the investigation, Allen Rich, no age or address listed, has been charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Rich turned himself in Aug. 1 and said he was the driver of the vehicle. The police department had sent out a bulletin earlier that day, relating that officers were looking for a newer model candy-apple red Ford F-150.
The investigation revealed that Rich had been traveling south on Jefferson Street and had stopped for the flashing red light at the Monroe Street intersection. After stopping, Rich proceeded south and struck Bethany Knudsen, who had been walking east in the crosswalk.
Rich told police that he thought Knudsen had struck his truck with her fist as he had not seen her in the crosswalk. Rich, not realizing he struck Knudsen, continued south on Jefferson Street.
Knudsen was taken by private vehicle to the Henry County Health Center for treatment.
