IWC baseball swept by Culver-Stockton
CANTON, Mo. — The Iowa Wesleyan College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Culver-Stockton College on Wednesday in Canton, Mo.
The Tigers lost 12-4 in game one and 11-9 in game two, dropping them to 15-16 on the year.
In the opener, IWC got off to a strong start with a run in the first inning, but Culver-Stockton responded with two runs in the bottom of the opening frame to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. They had a big third inning to widen the gap, scoring seven runs.
IWC’s Louis Rivera went 2-for-2 in the game with a walk and two runs knocked in.
David Barrios was 1-for-2, while Michael Reed, Nathan Strusz and Jeffrey Burdett were each 2-for-4. Burdett had an RBI.
Five IWC errors were a big factor in the game, as Culver-Stockton earned only five of its 12 runs.
Joseph Neilson took the loss on the mound for the Tigers after pitching the first three innings. Logan Thomas pitched the last three innings in relief.
In the nightcap, IWC went scoreless through the first four innings. They scored one run in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in the seventh, but it was still too little, too late.
Seven different players had one hit each for the Tigers. Jacob Neilson had two RBI.
Edgar Silva took the loss on the mound. Kyle Zicafoose and Burdett also pitched in the game for IWC.
Next up for the Tigers is a two-day, four-game series against Ashford University. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday in Clinton.
