IWC softball splits clash with Rams
MT. VERNON — The weather finally relented enough for the Iowa Wesleyan College softball team to get in two games against Cornell College on Saturday.
The Tigers split a pair of shutouts with the Rams, falling 8-0 in game one and coming back to defeat their hosts, 4-0, in game two.
The split moves the Tigers to 16-13 overall.
The Tigers' bats were cold in game one as they managed to record just three hits in the game. Mikayla Dwyer had two of those hits, going 2-for-2 in the game.
Ayla Serrano took the loss on the mound in game one. The Rams used two big innings to get the win, scoring three in the second inning and adding five more in the bottom of the fourth. Serrano allowed eight runs on eight hits.
In game two, Sonja Holmes shut down the Rams' bats as she pitched seven scoreless innings for the Tigers. Holmes allowed just four hits and struck out two in the win.
The Tigers scored their first run in the second inning of the nightcap. With two outs, Andrea Bury, Jillian Leutscher and Ashley Mysliwiec each singled to centerfield; Bury scored from second on Mysliwiec’s hit.
That’s all they would need for the win, but the Tigers added two insurance runs in the third. Ashley Stube led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on Tory Beaver’s sacrifice bunt, and went to third on a Kristine Becks single. Serrano’s ground out put runners on second and third, and Samantha Shepard’s single to centerfield brought both of them home.
The Tigers added one more run before claiming the win. Leutscher singled to lead off the seventh inning and advanced to second on Mysliwiec’s sacrifice bunt.
Stube singled, and both runners advanced on a hit by Beaver. Leutscher then crossed the plate on Becks’ ground out.
Shepard went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk. Leutscher was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Overall, the Tigers had eight hits from seven different players in the game.
The Tigers will next head to Greenville, Ill., on Wednesday to take on Greenville College.
Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
