IWC softball splits tournament games
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. — The Iowa Wesleyan College softball team got one big win and was dealt one big loss on Saturday at a tournament in Elizabethtown, Ky.
The Tigers were supposed to play two games on Sunday as well, but those were rained out.
On Saturday morning, the Tigers picked up an 8-2 win over Briar Cliff University.
Leading IWC at the plate in the game was Ayla Serrano, who was 3-for-4 with three RBI and Tory Beaver, who went 3-for-5 and knocked in three more.
Six other Tigers had one hit each; Samantha Shepard and Ashley Mysliwiec each had one RBI. Jillian Leutscher and Ashley Stube scored two runs apiece; four other Tigers crossed the plate once.
Sonja Holmes got the win on the mound for IWC. She faced 26 batters in seven innings, walked one and allowed five hits. She struck out nine. Both of Briar Cliff’s runs were earned.
Later on Saturday, the Tigers fell to West Virgina Tech by a score of 9-0. Serrano was the losing pitcher; she allowed six hits, struck out six batters and walked four. IWC had three fielding errors.
Stube and Mysliwiec each hit a single for the Tigers, who are now 5-5 on the season. They will play at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo., on Tuesday, starting at 3 p.m.
