IWC softball sweeps Blackburn, swept by Spalding over weekend
The Iowa Wesleyan College softball team split its four games over the weekend. The Tigers were swept by Spalding University on Friday before coming back to take both games of a doubleheader against Blackburn College on Saturday.
On Friday, IWC came up just short in game one, 5-4, and fell to Spalding by a score of 13-8 in game two. Haleigh Cowan and Kassie Vazquez were each 1-for-3 with a double.
Mikayla Dwyer smashed a home run in game one, and Caitlin O’Neil went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In game two, Cowan was 3-for-4 with three doubles; Vazquez and Jillian Leutscher also had a double each.
Kristine Becks was 2-for-2 and O’Neil was 2-for-4.
Leutscher took the loss on the mound in both games. She started game one and pitched in relief in the second contest.
On Saturday, IWC picked up an 8-4 win in game one.
Leutscher was on the mound once again and got the win.
At the plate, Dwyer went 2-for-4 with a solo shot and three RBIs.
Leutscher, 3-for-4 in the game, smacked a double and a triple, knocking in two runs. Cowan and Becks also had a double each.
Game two was a pitchers’ dual, as IWC claimed the 1-0 win.
The Tigers’ Stephanie Tillman had a season-high nine strikeouts en route to the victory.
Andrea Bury went 2-for-3 at the plate for IWC, knocking in the game’s only run.
The Tigers are now 12-16 overall and remain at .500 in conference play with a record of 6-6.
They play at home this week when they host Eureka on Wednesday. The doubleheader begins at 4 p.m. at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.
