IWU men split in Waverly

WAVERLY — The Iowa Wesleyan men’s basketball team traveled to Waverly for two games this weekend. The Tigers suffered an 88-70 loss to Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday night and bounced back with a 111-101 double overtime win over Marian University on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers fell behind, 48-33, in the first half of the UW-Oshkosh loss and never recovered. IWU was also outscored, 40-37, in the second half.
Marquis Jones scored 22 points in the loss to lead the way. He was 7-11 from the field and 8-9 from the line. He also had a team-leading five rebounds.
Steven Soukup scored 15 points and pulled down four rebounds. Mitch Drey had 11 points. Michael Soukup had 11 points and four assists, which led the Tigers. Brock Butler had seven points and C.J. Singletary had four.
The Tigers came back from 12 points down in the second half in their double-overtime win over Marian. Singletary scored 12 points of the Tigers’ last 23 points in regulation, including back-to-back layups with 23 seconds left to tie the game at 85-85.
Drey had a couple of clutch free throws to tie the game at 94-94 with 1:23 left in the first overtime. The Tigers had three-point looks at the end of both regulation and the first overtime, but neither shot fell.
IWU finally broke Marian in the second overtime, scoring the first 10 points of the period, which put the game away.
Steven had an incredible 40 points and 10 rebounds in the win. He went 11-22 from the field, 7-14 from three-point land and 11-12 from the free throw line. As a team, the Tigers finished 31-33 from the charity stripe.
Singletary finished the game with 22 points and five rebounds. Butler had 16 points and led the team with four assists. Drey had 13 points and Michael finished with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Jones had five points for the Tigers in the win, and Patrick Anderson scored four points, all on free throws in the second overtime.
The Tiger men moved to 1-2 overall to start the season. They’ll host Nebraska Wesleyan University in their next game, on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 8 p.m.
