IWU women drop fourth in a row
Iowa Wesleyan hosted Central College Tuesday evening in a non-conference match up. The Tigers entered the game without a win and were hoping to stop their three-game losing streak. Central proved to be too much for the Tigers, and IW dropped to 0-4 after suffering a 66-50 defeat to the Dutch.
Central was able to jump out to an early lead, scoring the first five points of the contest. Cairece Allen put the Tigers on the board with a free throw, and Jaimie Hurd hit a jumper to bring IW within two points. Iowa Wesleyan was able to stay with the Dutch in the first five minutes of play, but Central began to pull away as the quarter progressed. Central ended the first quarter with a 27-14 advantage over IW.
Hurd kicked off the scoring in the second quarter for the Tigers. She hit a three pointer on an assist from Darby Massner. The three-pointer put IW within 11 points of the Dutch, the closest they would get the remainder of the game. By the end of the half, Iowa Wesleyan trailed 41-20. Central held the Tigers to 13.3 percent shooting from the field in the second quarter, and IW was 1-7 from behind the arc.
The Tigers were able to get some shots to fall in the third period, improving their shooting percentage to 35.3 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three range. Despite the improvement, the Dutch continued to extend their lead. With three minutes remaining in the period, Central held a 25-point lead. Iowa Wesleyan was able to get the deficit under 20 right before the end of the quarter. LaStella Slack scored in the paint to bring the score to 57-39 with 32 seconds left to play.
Allen hit a three pointer to start the fourth period, and IW was within 15 points of the lead. Central made the next six points to extend their lead again. Slack once again scored in the paint cut the deficit to 19. Massner scored the final points of the game with a three pointer. Massner’s three brought the score to 50-66, and the Dutch secured the win.
Massner and Hurd led the Tigers in scoring against the Dutch. Massner finished with a team high 14 points and also added five rebounds. Hurd recorded 12 points and six steals for IW. Slack had a team high nine rebounds, including eight offensive boards in the loss.
The Tigers return to action after Thanksgiving with a game against Grinnell College on Nov. 26. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Ruble Arena. Iowa Wesleyan is now 0-4 overall and will have one more game before kicking off conference play.
