Jerry Bentler, 90 years, of Houghton, Iowa died peacefully at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the Henry County Health Center, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa surrounded by her family members. She was born December 24, 1923 in Fort Madison, Iowa, a daughter of William McKinley and Anna Dorthea (Merschman) Rooney. On November 4, 1946, she married LeRoy J. Bentler at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Fort Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on January 20, 2013.
Jerry was a 1942 graduate of Catholic Central High School in Fort Madison, Iowa and was a member of a group of girls questionably called the “Holy Five.” Later she worked at W.A. Sheaffer Pen, and was a volunteer at the Sacred Heart Hospital during the war. She met her husband, LeRoy, at a dance. Both enjoyed dancing for many years.
She co-authored the book, Houghton, Iowa 1881-1981, with Eileen Denning and her son, John Bentler. Through the years, she helped her husband with his many businesses. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church. She was known for her sassy humor, was an avid reader, and enjoyed craft projects and quilting. She was a homemaker, supportive wife, and mother of seven children. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the joy of her life.
She is survived by seven children: John (Ruth) Bentler, of Iowa City, Iowa; Rebecca Bentler, of Fridley, Minnesota; Katie (John) Morrow, of Bettendorf, Iowa; Rich (Diana) Bentler, of Washington, Iowa; Lynn (Tony) Fedler, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Peg (Kenny) Welcher, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; and Larry (Wendy) Bentler, of Fairfield, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren: Andrew (Wendy) Bentler, Christopher (Anna) Bentler, Ellie (Justin) Kearns, Jennifer Bentler-Morrow, Ryan (Alison) Morrow, Jason (Lauren) Bentler, Kristin (Jamie) Evans, Dustin (Lisa Soecknick) Bentler, Josh (Anita) Fedler, Jeff (Shannon) Fedler, Elizabeth (Guillermo) Pinon, Stephanie (Kyle) Wick, Morgan (Rob) Lance, Lindsey (Cody) Torgler, and Ella Bentler; 13 great grandchildren: Grace, Liam, and Penelope Morrow; Cailynn, Ciaran, and Ashlynn Bentler; Avery, Sophia, and Logan Fedler; Allie, Nolan, and Cole Evans, and Lucy Lance; nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers: Bill, Jim, and Dick Rooney.
A Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2014 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Houghton, Iowa, where the family will greet friends until 6:30 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Houghton, Iowa with Reverend Bruce DeRammelaere as Celebrant. Burial will be at the St. John’s Cemetery, Houghton, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and Camp Courageous, of Monticello, Iowa, contributions may be made at the Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home or at the church on the day of the service.
