Joel Howard Garretson, Sr., 88, rural Salem, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa Ctiy.

A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date at Salem East Cemetery in Salem. The Kimzey Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born Sept. 24, 1924, in Mt. Pleasant, he was the son of Dr. Joel Howard Garretson and May Martina (Johnson) Garretson. He was raised on the family farm southeast of Salem and attended Glandale country school. He was a 1942 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. He attended Iowa Wesleyan College and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps on June 25, 1943, serving as a flight officer and pilot of the B-26 Martin Marauder. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 23, 1945. On Sept. 27, 1947, he married Joyce Kathleen Stuart at the United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant.

He was engaged in farming thoughout his life. He also worked in the carpentry trade and as a vocational instructor in buidling trades at Southeastern Community College, teaching at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Ft. Madison.

He was a member of the American Legion Simkin-Pidgeon Post #94 of Salem. He enjoyed musroom hunting in the “timber,” woodworking and projects in his shop, gardening, canning and working in his orchard. He also enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Joel H. (Marlene) Garretson, Jr., and Robert S. Garretson, all of Salem; a daughter, Cathy (Dave ) Helman of Salem; a sister, Josie (Harlan) Bainter of Salem; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Garretson; a sister, Virginia Woollis; and a brother, Charles Garretson.
