Justin Dilks gets win No. 100
FAIRFIELD — After four years of working toward the goal, it took less than a minute for Mt. Pleasant’s Justin Dilks to get the 100th win of his high school wrestling career.
The 220-pounder hit the milestone at the Southern Iowa Classic in Fairfield on Saturday when he pinned Albia’s Jacob West in 58 seconds.
“It was pretty short,” Dilks said.
And that was fitting for the Class 3A, 220-pound No. 4 wrestler, who is now 25-0 on the season with 15 pins, including 11 pins in the first period.
Dilks knew going into the tournament that he was just two wins away from 100.
He got No. 99 in his first match of the day, when he pinned Ft. Madison’s Cody Charbonneau in 1:51.
Going into the match against West, the undefeated Dilks was confident he would hit the 100-win mark.
“I was ... excited,” he said. “I wasn’t really nervous at all.”
The rest of the day went well for the Panther wrestler, too, as he got win No. 101 against Fairfield’s Brett Scott to win his weight class at the tournament.
Dilks will look for win No. 102 at Muscatine on Thursday, when the Panthers compete against Muscatine, Keokuk and North Scott, and he has big goals for the rest of the season.
“I want to win districts for the first time and win state,” he said. “It’s definitely a big goal.”
Dilks placed eighth in the state tournament last season, competing at 182 pounds. He also qualified for state as a freshman. In his sophomore year, an injury during the district tournament ended his season.
This year, the Mt. Pleasant wrestling team will compete in the district tournament at Burlington on Feb. 15.
