KEEPING WATCH: SOME HISTORY OF ISRAEL, APARTHEID, SOUTH AFRICA AND NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION
INTERNATIONAL — 1/20/2014
Nelson Mandela “never forgot Jerusalem’s strong alliance with the apartheid state. Israel and South Africa upheld very extensive military cooperation over decades, and Jerusalem was one of the last to join the international campaign to isolate the racist regime.”
“The ANC, in common with the international community, was extremely unhappy about the military cooperation between the State of Israel and the apartheid regime in South Africa. The refusal of Israel, over many years, to honor its international obligations to isolate the apartheid regime did influence our attitude towards that government,” Mandela said few months before being elected president.
“While Mandela was very critical of Israel’s support for the apartheid regime, “he didn’t make a big issue of it,” Shimoni said. “His whole attitude — to everything — was not to look for vengeance and not to dig up the records in the past, but rather to work for a reconciliation and to look forward.”
If Rabin, who had just been elected prime minister, makes peace with the Palestinians, then “we will judge Israel on that merit,” Madiba told Israel’s Ambassador to South Africa.

"As hard as officials in Jimmy Carter’s administration tried, their nonproliferation policy failed to prevent South Africa from acquiring the bomb soon after Carter left office, and subsequent U.S. administrations couldn’t stop Israel from helping the apartheid state develop more advanced components of its nuclear arsenal."
excerpt from Sasha Polakow-Suransky’s groundbreaking book that delves deep into the alliance. Titled “The Unspoken Alliance: Israel’s Secret Relationship with Apartheid South Africa,” it was published in 2010.

1/17/2013 MORE and MORE JOBS GOING AWAY
Efforts to fast track approval of the Trans Pacific Partnership in Congress now are in keeping with the efforts by government to know everything about what We the People are doing even while we are kept in the dark about what is being done to us. We were blind-sided by NAFTA and now….
“Twenty years after the North American Free Trade Agreement, working Americans are still reeling from job loss, pay cuts and a deepening environmental crisis.”
But that was minor compared to what is coming…
“The TPP will affect our laws, our jobs, our food and our environment. Fast track, also known as Trade Promotion Authority, forces Congress to give up its right to amend and improve this trade deal for ordinary Americans. In order to speed the trade bill to ratification, our elected representatives would be limited to a simple up-or-down vote.”… for the entire package as written by large multinational corporations.
“It's about our jobs and wages, our environment, our public health and our food safety. It's all on the line and it's up to us to hold the line in the weeks ahead.”
“TPP is about crafting rules that will favor big business at the expense of the rest of the population in both the United States and in other countries.
… The world has benefited from the opening of trade over the last four decades. But this opening has been selective so that, at least in the United States, most of the gains have gone to those at the top. It is possible to design trade deals that benefit the population as a whole, but not when corporate interests are literally the negotiators at the table.”
“The Obama administration is reportedly preparing to undermine strong environmental safeguards in trade talks with 11 other Pacific Rim countries. New documents released by WikiLeaks show the White House is ready to backtrack on a series of critical regulations in order to secure a deal on the Trans-Pacific Partnership. These include legally binding requirements for pollution limits, logging standards, and a ban on the harvesting of shark fins."
“The TPP is a massive, controversial “free trade” agreement currently being pushed by big corporations and negotiated behind closed doors by officials from the United States and 11 other countries – Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam. In one fell swoop, this secretive deal could:
- offshore millions of American jobs,
- roll back Wall Street reforms,
- sneak in SOPA-like threats to Internet freedom,
- ban Buy American policies needed to create green jobs,
- jack up the cost of medicines,
- expose the U.S. to unsafe food and products,
- and empower corporations to attack our environmental and health safeguards.
Although it is called a “free trade” agreement, the TPP is not mainly about trade. Of TPP’s 29 draft chapters, only five deal with traditional trade issues. One chapter would provide incentives to offshore jobs to low-wage countries. Many would impose limits on government policies that we rely on in our daily lives for safe food, a clean environment, and more. Our domestic federal, state and local policies would be required to comply with TPP rules. “

1/12/14 JOHN MCCAIN KNOWS HOW TO FLY A KITE
"McCain told CNN on Sunday that Congress was probably going to need to pass legislation to implement Obama’s recommendations, and was obliged to run its own investigation into the wider controversy over US surveillance."
“Is there anybody believes that this system is not broken in many respects? I think not,” McCain said."
He keeps the wind to his back.
"Adding to their rift with Washington, Afghan officials on Thursday accused the United States of continuing to operate illegal "black prisons" where prisoners are tortured."
1/11/2014 THE CALL IS FOUL FROM LEFT AND RIGHT
State lawmakers across the country are trying to pass laws preventing the National Security Agency from using public resources to spy on Americans without a warrant.
That means NSA facilities could be left without publicly funded water and power and companies that help with the surveillance could be disqualified from state contracts. And prosecutors would not be allowed to use NSA evidence collected without a warrant.
California, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas have proposed laws that include some or all of the restrictions, and an Arizona lawmaker has said she plans to introduce legislation soon.
“The NSA has been violating the Fourth Amendment rights of Americans for years,” said California state Sen. Ted Lieu, a Los Angeles–area Democrat who—along with state Sen. Joel Anderson, R–San Diego—sponsored his state’s bill.
IT TAKES A THIEF
I do not know what is the most troubling about this - the behavior of Hoover at the time or the current witness of FBI agents who to this day think the crime of the burglary should be actionable as a violation of national security but not the crimes of the FBI. At the highest levels the US has fallen off the edge into the abyss of a self absorbed police state. The likes of Hoover and his cronies now occupy NSA whose highest officials lie to Congress and pay no dues to the values, the laws and the Constitution of the American People.
The FBI covered for Hoover as a matter of National Security. Telling the people the truth about their government was/is forbidden. Only rarely do the People know the right questions to ask to expose what appears to be a continuous State of Deception.
Perhaps Snowden should be brought to trial and with him Bush and Obama and Clapper.
