Krieger's two blasts power New London to share of conference crown
WEST BURLINGTON — Junior shortstop Jorgi Krieger powered New London to a 7-2 win over West Burlington-Notre Dame Thursday night.
Krieger hammered home runs in consecutive at-bats to drive in five runs and help the Tigers clinch a share of their first Southeast Iowa Superconference Southern Division softball title since 2007.
The game also pitted state-ranked teams, the Tigers coming in ranked third in Class 1A and WB-ND listed 12th among Class 3A schools.
Krieger’s first circuit blast came in a four-run fifth inning which broke a 1-1 deadlock at that point. Two innings later, her second home run gave the 17-4 (9-0 in the conference) Tigers some breathing room.
Krieger, who is hitting over .600 this week, and Victoria Noel each had three of the team’s 11 hits. Sami Koontz rapped a pair of singles and other safeties were from the bats of Emily Parks, Emma Pry and Sarah Holtkamp.
Sophomore pitcher Morgan Christner took care of the rest, limiting the 16-8, 7-3 Falcons to just three hits. She did not walk a hitter and struck out five.
