Lena I. Burkey
Lena I. Burkey 99, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Salem, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant.
No services are planned at this time. Burial will be in the Salem East Cemetery at a later date. According to her wishes her body has been cremated. A memorial has been established in her memory to the Salem East Cemetery.
Lena Iona was born on May 2, 1914, in Henry County the daughter of Emerson & Anna Belle McDowell Brown. She was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School in the Class of 1932, and was united in marriage to Kenneth C. Burkey on February 20, 1935; he preceded her in death on October 18, 1996. She was a music teacher for many years in the area and at App’s Music House in Burlington. Lena lived in the Salem and Mt. Pleasant area’s most of her life expect for a short time she lived in Idaho. She was a member of the Salem Congregational Church in Salem and a former member of the Salem Eastern Star.
She is survived by her children: Elaine Bunge of Lowden, Ralph Burkey of Star, Idaho, Darrell Burkey of Franklinville, N.J. and Gary Burkey of Lockridge; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; two nieces; Arlene Beavers and Dorothy Boyd both of Mt. Pleasant.
Lena is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers: Chester Brown and Leonard Brown and one sister Neva Chrisinger.
