Lena I. Burkey, 99, Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Salem, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Salem Congregational Church in Salem with the Rev. Aaron Helterbran officiating. Burial was in the Salem East Cemetery. A memorial has been established in her memory to the Salem East Cemetery.

She was born on May 2, 1914, in Henry County, and was the daughter of Emerson and Annis Belle McDowell Brown. She was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School in the class of 1932, and married Kenneth C. Burkey on Feb. 20, 1935; he preceded her in death. She was a music teacher for many years in the area and at App’s Music House in Burlington. She lived in the Salem and Mt. Pleasant areas most of her life, except for a short time when she lived in Idaho. She was a member of the Salem Congregational Church in Salem and a former member of the Salem Eastern Star.
She is survived by her children, Elaine Bunge of Lowden, Ralph Burkey of Star, Idaho, Darrell Burkey of Franklinville, N.J. and Gary Burkey of Lockridge; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers, Chester Brown and Leonard Brown; and one sister, Neva Chrisinger.
