Lloyd H. Van Winkle, Jr., 85, died Friday, March 22, 2013, at his daughter’s home in Ft. Madison.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. Pastor Mark Pries will officiate. Burial will be in the St John’s Lutheran Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday.

He was born Aug. 17, 1927 in Ft. Madison, the son of Lloyd and Ruth (Genck) Van Winkle Sr. He graduated from Ft. Madison High School.
He served in the United States Marines during WWII and the Korean War. In 1952 he was married to Gladys Siegfried; they later divorced.
He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 22 years as a perishable inspector. He lived in Chicago and Streator, Ill., before moving to Iowa City in 1991. In 1997 he married Dora Kleinschmidt in Shamrock, Texas.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Last year he had the opportunity to go on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with family.
He is survived by his wife of Iowa City; three children, Janet Ough of Ft. Madison, Lloyd Van Winkle III of St. Louis, Mo., and Carol Van Winkle of Tampa, Fla.; 17 grandchildren, and 28 great -grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daugter, Vicki Rhodes; a grandson, a great-grandson, and a sister, Mary Stein.
