Lone Tree tops WACO
WAYLAND — The WACO girls came close, but they couldn’t quite get past Lone Tree during their Tuesday night basketball game in Wayland, falling by a score of 52-42.
The Warriors boys were blasted by Class 1A No. 2 Lone Tree in their Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division matchup, 87-38.
In the girls’ game, WACO fell behind in the first half, going down 27-19 at halftime. They fought their way back to a 37-37 tie early in the fourth quarter, but let the game slip away in the final few minutes.
Aaliyah Brown led the Warriors with nine points and Jaelyn Unternahrer scored eight.
Gaby Wagler and Hannah Black each chipped in seven points, and Jalyssa Jepson contributed six.
The girls are now 6-14 on the season and 5-13 in the SEISC North.
In the boys’ game, Lone Tree again took an early lead, but this time, the Lions didn’t slow down on their way to victory.
Tyler Ayers scored a team-high 15 points for WACO in the loss.
Klinton Garrett tallied nine points and Aaron Barnhart added eight.
The WACO boys fall to 6-12 on the season and 6-10 in the SEISC North.
The Warriors play again Thursday when they host Louisa-Muscatine. The varsity girls’ game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.
