Long named SEC Player of the Year
Mt. Pleasant’s Holly Long received the top honor from Southeast Conference girls’ soccer coaches this season, earning the title of SEC Player of the Year.
Long, a senior, led the Panthers in goals scored this season with 18 — including a hat trick in a conference match against Keokuk on April 11.
She also had five assists for 41 points on the season, another a team-high.
Long was a key component to the Panthers’ success this season, as they went 6-0 in the conference to earn their third straight SEC title.
Long earned first team all-conference recognition along with her Player of the Year honors, and she is joined on the conference first team by three teammates and fellow seniors: Kathryn Chabal, Lauren Hillman and Linzie Hood.
Chabal, a defender, and Hood, a midfielder, each had two goals this season, and Hood also had three assists for seven total points. Hillman stopped 163 goals as the Panthers’ keeper.
Hillman and the defense recorded eight shutouts this season in their 12 wins as a team. The Panthers finished 12-6 overall on the year.
Two Panthers were also given an all-conference honorable mention: seniors Mila Argueta and Megan Schneider.
Twelve of the Panther players were given all-academic honors. These players are juniors Megan Myers and Erin Watt, and seniors Argueta, Chabal, Hillman, Hood, Allie Liechty, Long, Ngoc Pham, Madison Pullis, Schneider and Sarah Van Dorin.
Six of the Mt. Pleasant boys’ soccer players also received all-academic recognition: junior Nhut Le and seniors Braden Holtkamp, Derek Holtkamp, Anh Le, Drake Martin and Brach Prough.
