Lucille M. Garrels
Lucille M. Garrels, 82, New London, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Elliott Chapel, New London. The Rev. Jeff McPheron will be officiating. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery, rural New London. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. A memorial has been established for the New London United Methodist church.
She was born Oct. 21, 1930, in Brighton to Steve and Velma Hinkle Shelangoski. In 1951, at Fairfield, she married Harold Burnett. He preeceded her in death. On December 8, 1990, in New London, she married Miles F. Garrels.
She was a graduate of Lockridge High School, attended one year at Iowa Wesleyan College and was of member of the New London United Methodist Church. She owned and operated the “Deli Depot” in Mt. Pleasant for several years and also worked as a bookkeeper. She enjoyed watching “Wheel Of Fortune,” cooking, and bookkeeping.
She is survived by her husband of New London; two daughters, Deb Burchett of Mt. Pleasant and Dee (Bruce) Franke of Fairfield; one step-daughter, Sue (Danny) Stier of Newton; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband and two brothers, Harold and Lyle Shelangoski.
