Mabeus leads MP girls’ golf to season-opening win
Courtney Mabeus earned medalist honors and led the Mt. Pleasant girls’ golf team to a season- and Southeast Conference-opening win over Fairfield at Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.
The Panthers defeated the visiting Trojans by a score of 193-234.
“It was good to get a victory to start the season on a very windy day,” Coach Jim Kelly said. “Our two seniors led the way with Courtney Mabeus shooting an excellent score of 43 followed up by Brianne Holtkamp’s outstanding score of 47.”
Mabeus earned medalist honors with her score, and Holtkamp was the runner up.
Haley Booton carded a 51 for Mt. Pleasant and Emily Cox rounded out the varsity scoring with a 52.
Hailey Spence and Elle Schleisman also played varsity for Mt. Pleasant; they shot a 54 and 55, respectively, on the par-36 course.
“The nice thing about the team win is that we have much room for improvement,” Kelly said.
Fairfield was led by Lindsey Repp with a 49. Madelyn Swan scored 58 and Abby Adam shot a 62. Olivia Hammel completed the course in 65 strokes.
The Mt. Pleasant JV team also played at the meet, though they didn’t have a Fairfield team to compete against.
Madison Stearns, Ally Lowe and Calie Liechty each scored 57, while Jenny Miller shot a 79 and Kirstin Fry carded an 85.
“I thought our JV players showed some promise, so hopefully we can develop depth,” Kelly said.
Next up for the Mt. Pleasant team is their first tournament of the season. The Panthers play in the Keokuk Invitational on Thursday, starting at 10:30 a.m.
