Mabeus leads MP to second-place finish
DONNELLSON — A pair of career bests led the Mt. Pleasant girls’ golf team to a second-place finish at the Central Lee Invitational at Green Acres Golf Course on Saturday.
Burlington won with a 377, and the Panthers scored 384 to take second in the six-team tournament.
Courtney Mabeus was the runner-up medalist with a score of 88 on the par-74 course. She shot two nine-hole rounds of 44.
The lowest score on the day was from Alex Krebbiel; the Central Lee golfer shot an 81.
Brianne Holtkamp had a 90 for Mt. Pleasant, while Haley Booton shot a 100 and Elle Schleisman finished the course in 106 strokes. Madison Stearns shot a 128.
“This was an outstanding performance by our girls in achieving second place — and only seven strokes out of first place,” Coach Jim Kelly said. “We had career bests by Courtney Mabeus (88) and Brianne Holtkamp with a 90 as our two juniors led us to the runner up trophy.
“Haley Booton and Elle Schleisman rounded out our team total,” he added. “It was just a total team effort by our girls.”
The Panthers finished ahead of Washington (405), Central Lee (451), Keokuk (457) and Fairfield (500).
They golfed again today (Monday) at the Burlington Invitational, starting at 9 a.m. They will then be at Fairfield on Tuesday for a conference meet beginning at 4 p.m.
