Margie Smith, 96, Salem, died Monday, July 28, 2014, at the Burlington Care Center.
Friends may sign the register during normal business hours until 6 p.m., on Thursday, July 31, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Deb Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Salem East Cemetery. Born Aug. 13, 1917, in Henry County, she was the daughter of Albert and Florence Harmeson McDowell. She attended school in rural Salem, and later completed her education at the school in Salem. On Nov. 30, 1939, she married Dale Smith. He preceded her in death.
She was a homemaker and spent a great deal of time helping her brothers and sisters raise their children. Her favorite pastime was to go fishing with her husband. She was a member of the Salem Friends Church.
Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband; four brothers, Earn McDowell, Leo McDowell, Loren “Dutch” McDowell and Orville McDowell; and five sisters, Lona Long, Birdie Barton, Pearl Watson, Clara Triska-Farr and Violet Elmore.
